So I haven't been very good at posting, and neither has my husband, but he thought maybe if we team up on a joint blog, we might do better. So head on over to http://samdahl.blogspot.com/ to check out our new blog, where I have just posted a way too detailed account of our first few days in Mongolia. It will probably take a while for me to get through all of my photos, but Sam has posted all of his to Flickr so you can get a sneak preview. Link's over on the other blog. So if you're reading this by RSS or just check periodlically, update your feed/link. And if you're getting this by email from me and want to continue getting it that way, let me know and I'll add you to an email list. But I'm not going to add you unless you want me too, so just shoot me an email or leave a comment and I'll add you. Or you can sign up with Blog Alert on the link on the new blog to get an email notification when we update. See you over on the new blog!

Haven't been writing much - busy with work and life as it always happens. And swimming. Lots of time at Brighton Beach training for open water swimming, including the Manhattan Island Swim, which I completed yesterday as part of a four person relay for the third time. This year was the best one yet - sure, we didn't have much sun, but at least there wasn't any sunburns, or more importantly, lightening to stop the race. Our team did very well - we didn't win the 4-person relays like we did two years ago, but we came in second, behind a team from Mexico that has the record for a relay English Channel crossing, so we think that's pretty good. The rain also kept the water very flat, which was amazing especially in the Hudson. The currents weren't as strong in past years, but it was also easier in areas like Hell's Gate when we were battling the currents. Overall, a great time. Looking forward to it next year.

And we're off to Mongolia on a family vacation tonight, so we'll be back in three weeks with lots of stories and photos.

Halfway through swim practice this morning, in the middle of a set, my cap broke. Luckily I had an extra cap in my locker so I went upstairs, retrieved it, and headed back to the pool. About 100 yards after I got back in, the strap for my goggles broke. The lifeguard checked the lost and found and came up with a pair that looked semi-functional, but after a lap with them, I realized that being able to open the left eye might be nice, especially since it seemed to be cutting into flesh below my left eye mighty tightly. I checked my locker to no avail, but remembered that Sam had an extra pair in his bag. Sam got them for me and I proceeded to replace the strap of my goggles with the strap from his spare, since the sockets were a bit moldy. And then when I put them over my head, the nose piece broke. At that point, I figured it was best to just leave well enough alone and kick for the rest of practice. Some higher authority really didn't want me to swim today...

Last weekend we went up to Massachusetts to relax up at my parents' weekend house. The weather wasn't too nice on Saturday so we headed up to Mass MoCA. We've never been up there, and I'm glad we finally made it. It was a great space and there were some really interesting exhibits there. We were lucky to catch the Spencer Finch exhibit, which from what I read about it afterwards was supposed to have closed the week earlier. Some of the stuff was a bit contrived, but it definitely made me think about things in a different way. My favorite may have been the series "Odor of the Gowanus Canal". They really did evoke the odor of the canal!

For those five of you out there who still read the site, you've probably heard about our troubles with our deck. A few weeks ago, the engineering company finally installed the base material we needed to have before we could install the deck, so we decided to get some quotes for how much it would cost to reinstall our deck. When our neighbors put their deck back in themselves, we decided to give it a go at building it ourselves. The previous owner had done something really wacky with the deck so we had to completely rebuild the frame of the deck, but with a little help from my brother, we had the whole frame done in an afternoon and almost all the old wood for the top of the deck can be reused, so once we get rid of the old junk wood from the old frame, our deck saga is over!

My coworkers mine the place for snacks like pretzels and popcorn, or the occasional Haribo gummys, and I'll usually check there first if we need something like Crazy Glue or some other household product. But when I see anything "fresh", I tend to get scared. But maybe I shouldn't, since the former Le Bernadin chef put his faith in Jack's frozen salmon.

A few weeks ago, the IT department at work did a check on my computer and deleted a bunch of programs (including Bubbles!) that were always online since there was some worm going around. Turns out it was some email thing, not one of those programs, that was causing the problems (not just my computer but a whole bunch of them), but to be on the safe side, the IT department wouldn't let me reinstall Bubbles to be on the safe side. So I was just keeping Google Calender open, but the pop-up reminders weren't as nice since I couldn't leave them open if I wanted to look at anything online.

But now, Google has made my day and made a sync for Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook! The only thing I prefer about Outlook is that you can snooze the pop-ups, so now I get that when I'm at work, but still have the nice Google Calendar functions of seeing multiple calendars and being able to text my agenda to me. Yipee!

P.S. I'd like to bring this blog back to life at some point, but I just seem to keep forgetting about it. Like I had intended on writing about our nice walk to Chinatown last Sunday, but who knows if I'll ever end up getting the photos off my camera. Or the photos of the nice pizza and sweet potato soup I made last weekend. I suck. Oh well, life goes on.

Lately, I just haven't been inspired to blog. Part if it is that I think about stuff to write when I'm walking around, but I rarely get around to actually writing them. Part of it is that I just it doesn't seem like much is going on to talk about....I work, I come home, sometimes we eat at home, other times we go out. Sam built some speakers, so we've been listening to a lot of music to test them out.

Last weekend, though, we went out to dinner with some friends, R. and W., with the intention of grabbing dinner before seeing "There Will Be Blood". I suggested Restaurant New Orleans, a restaurant on Fulton not to far from BAM where were going to see the movie. I've passed by this place numerous times walking back from BAM and it always intrigues me. It is decorated like someone's parlor, but half the time its empty and sometimes we've passed by around 10pm and its been dark, with a woman sitting at a computer in the window.

Anyway, we decided to meet at 7, figuring it would leave us plenty of time to catch the 9pm movie. We sat down and browsed the menu while the man who sat us looked for a bottle opener and glasses for the bottle of wine we brought with us (byob). This took about 10 minutes, and the glasses we got were sherry glasses. When the waitress came to take our order, she nearly forgot to take W's order.

And then the fun started. R and W had ordered crab cakes and we had ordered shrimp cocktail as appetizers, but after about 20 minutes, only the crab cakes came out. After a few minutes, we tracked down our waitress (who was astonishingly hard to track down in a place that was also the size of a parlor), she said our appetizer was on its way. But then out came my catfish (which Sam and R had ordered as well), with a sweet potato on the side. I had ordered spinach and something else. The waitress said they were out of whatever sides I had ordered but they could make some nice garlic brussels sprouts. Sure, why not. About 5 minutes later, out came Sam and R's catfish as well. R's grilled catfish looked exactly the same as our blackened catfish. And they didn't have any sides. And there was no sign of W's gumbo. And it was about 8:30. The brussles sprouts never appeared.

We reminded our waitress about the appetizer, though we told her to just forget about it since we were already eating our main course. And then, about 5 minutes later, the reason for the missing shrimp cocktail became clear - they "were having a problem with the shrimp". And so they couldn't make the gumbo either. But they offered to make W a nice salmon fillet instead, on the house. She brought out a bowl of red beans and rice on the house too (we still never received any sides other than my sweet potato), so W ate those while waiting for the salmon, which came around 8:50. So we asked for the check too and paid that while W ate.

They felt so bad for all the trouble, so they comped us for two of the entrees and also offered us free brunch (though they didn't give us anything in writing indicating this). And they seemed so genuine that we weren't really upset about the service, mystified was the better word for our state. I mean, if they didn't have shrimp, they could have told us an hour earlier. Or the whole issue with the sides. W's dish came with collards, which both Sam and R had ordered but never came. How the place stays in business was the biggest question - its been there since we moved to the neighborhood I think. The food we did get was very good, but it just seemed like such a haphazard business that it was surprising that it was able to stay open.

Oh, and when we got to BAM right at 9pm, the movie was sold out. We saw The Diving Bell and the Butterfly instead, which was very good, but of course, not what we had our hopes on seeing. Despite all the issues, it was still a fun evening.

2007 was a good year. There were no moves, no new jobs. No major changes, just life as normal, which is fine in my book. Here's my rundown of the numbers from the past year.

My Year in Cities
Brooklyn, NY*
Iriving, TX
Tlequepaque, Mexico
Guadalajara, Mexico
Alford, MA*
Danbury, NH
St. Paul, MN
Somerville, MA
Stanfordville, NY
Hamilton, Bermuda
New York, NY*
Manhattan Beach, CA
Joshua Tree National Park, CA
Grand Canyon Village, AZ
Zion National Park, UT
Bryce Canyon National Park, UT
Moab, UT
Pittsburgh, PA

One or more nights spent in each place. Those cities marked with an * were visited multiple times on non-consecutive days. We had ourselves a few great vacations - relaxation in Mexico, an amazing trip to the southwest, a too short stint on the beach in Bermuda. (2006 and 2005)

As for the local scene, I kept track of all the <a href="http://www.communitywalk.com/dahlias_2007/map/49822#101<0010740.2aVn8-73.3Zb=0">places I went to in NYC. 34 visits to Cafe Charlie (at least that I remembered to record), which is a ton, but not that bad when you consider its literally across the street from the office.

And on the arts scene, I saw 30 movies in the theater and read 26 books, and 12 theater performances.

All in all, a great year.

My New Year's resolution for 2008 is to bike more in the city.

First, I fell for Google Reader. Then, it was Google Calendar (I love love love having an easy way to keep calendars coordinated with Sam on a regular basis!). And recently, I made the switch to gMail (love the message threads - makes my inbox look soooo much cleaner). At first, I was a bit annoyed that there wasn't a good syncing program between Google Calendar and Outlook, because those Outlook pop-ups are essential for remembering appointments. But then I discovered Bubbles to solve that problem. This way, I still get pop-ups on my desktop, and though I can't tell the reminder to pop back up in 10 minutes, it serves its purpose.

The only thing left I wanted was a way to sync my Google Calendar with my iPod, so that I could take a quick look at my calendar if I was scheduling something when away from a computer. I couldn't get Outlook to easily import my the .cal output from Google Calendar, so I had kind of given up until reading Lifehacker today. My solution was clear - iPodCALsync, which avoids having to sync to Google and goes right to my iPod.

Yesterday, the heat went off in our apartment for the first time in over a month, so we (and by we I mean Sam at my begging) took the opportunity to try and change the valve on our main radiator to one that will actually be able to shut the radiator off. We've actually had our windows open since the heat went on to try and keep our apartment at a normal temperature since the "thermostat" on our main radiator does nothing. Sadly, Sam was only partially successful at getting the old fixture unscrewed, so we were unable to replace the fixture and we're pretty much resigned to calling a plumber to fix it, but it was still nice to know my husband can do almost any repair around the house!

After a hard battle with the radiator, Sam settled down on the couch, which Paris saw as a perfect opportunity to get comfortable, in amazingly close proximity to Maddie.

Last weekend, we visited MOMA to check out the Seurat exhibit before it closed, as well as the Martin Puryear exhibit. I took a few photos for the Puryear exhibit from above, and I liked this one the best over ones that didn't show the railing.
