Up until last week, Sam and I had been planning on settling out here in the bay area. However, with no job, I realized maybe dragging Sam out here wasn't the best thing to do. Here's the choices I've been weighing recently.
| New York | |
|---|---|
| Pros | Cons |
| -It's NYC (like you need a better reason) | -More expensive for the space |
| -Friends | -Kiss my dreams of a big kitchen goodbye |
| -Family | -Most likely kiss my dreams of a two bedroom apartment goodbye |
| -Sam has a great job | -I have no job |
| -Don't have to move after the wedding | -Give up chance to try a new city for a while |
| -Save a lot of money by not having a car or car payments | -Will probably have to give up my baby (i.e. my Prius) |
| -While there are jobs in my field in NYC, most of them are not in the area I was hoping to specialize | |
| -Most of them are also not in NYC | |
| San Francisco | |
| Pros | Cons |
| -Nice weather (I know, I haven't lived through a SF "summer", but the surrounding areas are beautiful!) | -No job! |
| -Lots of outdoorsy stuff to do around here | -Sam has no job |
| -Potential for great job (though miniscule prospect of that happening before I need to make a decision) | -If Sam takes classes, we'd have to shorten our honeymoon |
| -More space for our money | -We'd have to move when we get back from the honeymoon |
| -Chance to try out new city | -Where to get wedding gifts sent becomes an issue |
| -Get to keep my car | -Only know a couple people up in the city |
| -Family and friends are across the country | |
| -Think we would eventually want to be in NY when starting a family | |

That's a toughie. Good luck!!!
San Francisco. There are many substantive reasons to pick the Bay Area over NYC given your particular situation RIGHT NOW, but I think that one of the more compelling is that if you don't, you're gonna wonder about what happens if you had...
"Here's the choices I've been weighing recently."
I hope you're not weighing this by yourself and are discussing this with him!
Also, I don't think the wedding gift stuff is that big a deal.
I vote for SF. You can always live in NY. Making change is hard but you might as well do it all the way...
(since you asked...)
Screw it all and flip a coin. Both places are good, you cannot go wrong :-)
